Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727 Agronomy
Pires, Luiz Fernando; Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa.
A first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (CT) equipped with a 137Cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. Core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a Brazilian clayey soil. Significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. CT data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.

Incidence of epigeal nest-building termites in Brachiaria pastures in the Cerrado - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i1.7075 Agronomy
Oliveira, Maria Inês Lopes de; UEL-Uiversidade Estadual de Londrina; Brunet, Didier; Pesquisador do Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD); Mitja, Danielle; Pesquisador do Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD); Cardoso, Wellington dos Santos; Graduação Biologia, Faculdade da Terra de Brasília , DF; Benito, Norton Pólo; Embrapa Cenargen; Guimarães, Maria de Fátima; Departamento de Agronomia, Universidade Estadual de Londrina-PR; Brossard, Michel; 2Institut de Recherche pour le Développement,.
This study aimed to determine the number of termite epigeal nests and estimate the soil turning capacity of termites in cultivated pasture environments and in a native vegetation area. Surveys were conducted in four areas: three pasture areas and a Cerrado area, measuring 5 ha each. For each nest, the height, the perimeter and diameter at the base were measured. The volume of each mound was calculated. Turned soil was determined by randomly sampling 30 termite mounds in a pasture area for bulk density determinations. The mean number of termite mounds per ha was 408; the highest number of termite nests (672 per ha) was found in the 10-year-old pasture. In terms of termite mound density, there was no difference between the Cerrado, 3-year-old pasture,...

Multivariate technique for determination of soil pedoenvironmental indicators in Southern Amazonas Agronomy
Oliveira, Ivanildo Amorim de; Marques Júnior, José; Campos, Milton César Costa; Aquino, Renato Eleoterio de; Freitas, Ludmila de; Ferraudo, Antônio Sérgio.
The use of statistical techniques to evaluate soil attribute behaviour is an important tool for choosing the most adequate form of soil management. Thus, the aim of this study was to jointly assess the physical and chemical attributes and the magnetic susceptibility characteristics of three environments and to use multivariate statistics to define which attributes have the greatest potential as environmental change indicators. The study was conducted in three areas: one with archaeological black earth (and planted maize); one with pasture; and one of the forest. Sixty-four (64) deformed and non-deformed soil samples each were collected within these areas, with a 70 x 70 m grid spaced every 10 meters at depths of 0.0-0.2 and 0.4-0.6 m, to determine the...
